Soon, Reddit won’t let people use Old.Reddit.com unless they have used the site while logged in within the previous six months.
In July, Reddit started requiring that users be logged in to access Old Reddit. This new requirement is an effort to reduce Reddit’s biggest source of scraping and automated traffic, the company says.
Today, the social media platform announced additional upcoming restrictions on Old Reddit. A Reddit post from an employee, known as “judy-funnie” on the platform, says that “in the next few months, we’ll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months (which covers the vast majority of all Old Reddit users).”
There is an exception for moderators, who will still be able to view Old Reddit regardless of when they last used it, as long as they are logged in.
“This helps keep Old Reddit available for the people who rely on it while reducing automated abuse,” the post says.
I’m sure it has nothing to do with old.reddit.com not having (as many? any? hard to say with uBO) ways to insert ads and manipulate the feed.
Alienating the people most likely to post and comment in a substantive way isn’t going to work out as well as they hope.
What does that mean exactly? If you go 6 months without accessing old reddit you’re locked out forever?
Literally just copy your session cookie from your browser into your own reader which periodically fetches new posts from subreddits you follow for you. No one needs to use reddit directly anymore if you have a little know-how ;)
Also buried in the article is that they’re killing off RSS feeds (unless you moderate that sub I guess).
I haven’t touched Reddit in a long time now, and I have no plans to go back. But if I still did use it, killing old Reddit would have me leaving entirely. Their “new” interface was atrocious on release and I assume it’s far worse now that they’ve ramped up hard on ads.
I am still keeping sync alive using my own api key.
I wish they would just kill Reddit completely, so the remaining niche hobby communities I participate in on Reddit will finally move somewhere else. Lemmy is good, but but not enough people use it for the same niche communities to exist and thrive here, unfortunately.
Don’t care, already left.
Patched. 😆😞
SearXNG generates nice “cached” links for reddit search results to the Wayback Machine, which is helpful if an archived version exists. It’s so painfully slow, though (no shade on archive.org - we’re lucky they still exist). I finally went back to DDG for routine searches. 🙁
The only reddit I use now is either via redlib, or by the domain listing which still use old.reddit.com format for the time being (https://www.reddit.com/domain/v.redd.it/ for example, or https://www.reddit.com/domain/youtube.com/ / https://www.reddit.com/domain/youtu.be/). But once they kill those domain listings I’ll not be spending much time there.
It’s funny how I hated the migration from Digg to reddit back in 2010 because reddit looked so ass, but once I got used to the features Reddit Enhancement Suite brought along, it was hard to give up.
Obligatory “fuck spez” and why not “fuck kevin rose” as well.
I guess Redlib will also die out in the long run… Hasn’t been updated for months 🥲🥲🥲☹️

Cutting off all the 3rd party mobile apps showed that in the long run it doesn’t matter
It did because there was a noticeable quality bump after third party apps were cut off so while it didn’t cause most users to leave, it made a substantiative jump further down the enshittification path that will eventually alienate everyone.
Let’s be absolutely clear, they didn’t just kill third-party apps.
And to be fair, third party apps often bypassed their ads. So Reddit had a legitimate grievance there. The apps were contributing nothing, were collecting money from Reddit users, and the app I’m going to talk about, Apollo, actually had a recurring subscription if you weren’t one of the first ones to buy it.
So Apollo was kind of the big dog and so Reddit basically went after them primarily. After the conversation did not go well for Reddit, Reddit’s CEO started telling everyone that the Apollo dev tried to extort Reddit. The Apollo dev did make a joke about money changing hands, but he absolutely did not extort Reddit, and he brought the receipts. He transcribed the call… for those who didn’t have time to listen to the actual recording, which he also shared.
With a big pie in their face, Reddit reacted by killing third-party apps entirely. And it was mostly based on a lie.
Reddit is run by the Epstein class anyway. Heck, I was banned just for suggesting longer prison terms for people who prey upon children. I guess they took that as a threat against their leadership? And/or certain politicians who they support (or who support them)?
And to be fair, third party apps often bypassed their ads. So Reddit had a legitimate grievance there.
Reddit has an ad-free subscription, Reddit Premium. The sensible thing for Reddit to do would have been to limit third-party app access to Premium subscribers, but they demanded the app developers pay up instead of the users.
I mean, that jackass move is how I found Beehaw! But the reality is, many old. users didn’t use apps in the first place. So while that was a clusterfuck, it wasn’t surgically targeted at the very people who produce the content that makes Reddit valuable. Cutting off access to old. will be the final straw for me, and I’m going to guess I’m not alone. I don’t want some cartoonish, ad-laden approximation of Reddit.
That’s how I found my instance as well.
I hope that some more people will come join us but you are correct that it will make no difference in the long run.
and manipulate the feed.
I’m pretty sure in this regard there is no difference. Odd entries show up on my front page every day.
Didn’t Runescape Classic pull this stunt when it was still a thing?
Runescape Classic is still a thing, and it has an app now too
No, you’re thinking of Old School Runescape, Runescape Classic is something else entirely
