Contramuffin@lemmy.worldto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Arr, Captain, 'tis time for me to leave the crew9·2 months agoIt should also be mentioned that the two methods aren’t mutually exclusive, and there’s a ton of synergy between using the old ways (x-ray crystallography and cryo-em) and using the new way (AlphaFold). Because even when you measure the protein structure, the old ways only tell you the shape of the protein but not the skeletal structure of the protein (which is the actual important part), so to my knowledge, there’s a bit of finicking around to figure out how the protein folds into that shape. AlphaFold predicts how the protein folds, so you can cross reference that with the measured shape of the protein to better estimate where the protein skeleton is in the measured shape

(though it’s most often talked about in that context) It’s the general idea that whenever you rush a project by taking shortcuts, you have to spend more time later to sort it out (and let’s be honest, it’s never actually going to get sorted out)

This creates a proper shoelace knot (aka double slipped square knot). You need to alternate. The alternation creates a self-tightening knot. If you do left over left, left over left (or the other way), then you’ve just done a granny knot, which will fall apart

Not as feature rich, I suspect, but it doesn’t disrupt my workflow due to how similar it is to Microsoft Office

More specifically, what humans care about is pixel density. A 24 inch 1080p screen does not look the same as a 27 inch 1080p, which does not look the same as a 32 inch 1080p.
A 24 inch 1080p screen is perfectly fine. A 27 inch 1080p, you can start to see the pixels more clearly. A 32 inch 1080p IMO is unacceptably bad.
I would say the standard should be 1080p for 24 inch or under, 1440p for 24-27 inch, 4K for 27 inch or above
I personally run a 24 inch 1440p screen because I’m pretty picky with pixel density, and the monitor was relatively good deal.
There is also the factor that the user appears unaware that the feature he is requesting is already present, because you can just cut/paste.

If my memory serves me correctly, the average typing speed is around 40 wpm. And sure, that kind of speed can get the job done but it definitely won’t be a good time. My elementary school was pretty forward-thinking in this respect. They signed us up for computer literacy and typing courses that would last for multiple years that we would do in computer class. I think everyone in my class was hitting at least 50 wpm by middle school. I was typing a solid 70 wpm.
Anyways, I think there are certain aspects of typing where having guidance could really help. I know people who chicken-peck because that’s just how they’ve always done it and they’ve never broken that habit.

If her typing is a concern (and it may well be since she’ll be typing much more in college), it may be helpful to search for some typing courses. My impression is that there are some free online ones, but I don’t remember any off the top of my head.

Should be fun to watch17·2 years agoAn admin was caught editing pixels without cooldown to draw over several communities’ art. Iirc, it was mainly to overwrite NSFW art. When people noticed, the comments that mentioned it got deleted
You’re correct. Modern keyboards have the CPU poll the keyboard rather than interrupting the CPU. Hardware interrupt really occurred with the old PS/2 keyboards, so this meme is technically outdated
Oh, just because someone is abusive or unsupportive doesn’t mean that they don’t love you. It just means that their interactions aren’t healthy for you and you need to establish boundaries.
Regardless, I hope that you’re doing well. I don’t know what your project is, but I can certainly tell you that it’s much more impressive than anything I’ve made
It doesn’t get crispy, but on the other hand, less microplastics on your food, so that’s a fine trade anyways.
Pro tip: microwave for half the microwave time, then bake for half the baking time. That reproduces the original crispiness without the sleeve
