  • Spock himself explicitly states as much. I forget the episode, and I’m not having luck searching for quotes, but good ol’ Leonard Nimoy straight up says, (paraphrasing from memory because I can’t find the exact quote) “… quite the contrary. Vulcans feel emotion, stronger than humans. They must be repressed and controlled lest they become overpowering.” or such similar direct statements.

It doesn’t explicitly jive with some of the other writing for the character, where he outright says things like, “I am incapable of that emotion”, or otherwise acts like a stone wall in some scenes. Though he’s not written so poorly that it’s impossible to reconcile, either. Pretty easy to assume he’s simply on top of his emotions in those scenes and doesn’t want to give in nor wants to explain.

  • Ehhhhh it kinda’ depends. Most things that are merely changing how something already present on the page is displayed? Probably don’t need JS. Doing something cool based on the submit or response of a form? Probably don’t need JS. Changing something dynamically based off of what the user is doing? Might not need JS!

Need to do some computation off of the response of said form and change a bunch of the page? You probably need JS. Need to support older browsers simply doing all of the previously described things? Probably need JS.

It really, really depends on what needs to happen and why. Most websites are still in the legacy support realm, at least conceptually, so JS sadly is required for many, many websites. Not that they use it in the most ideal way, but few situations are ideal in the first place.

A lot of this is just non-tech savvy people failing to understand the limitations and history of the internet.

(this isn’t to defend the BS modern corporations pull, but just to explain the “how” of the often times shitty requirements the web devs are dealing with)

  • I’d strongly suggest running a higher resolution (if your monitor supports it) and just using the various scaling/accessibility options of your OS. I cannot handle raw 4k any more, but I’ve been running with it just fine at 150% scale for probably over a decade now, on various versions of Windows and Linux (XFCE and Plasma, mostly). Only the very rare ancient program from Windows XP days won’t scale properly, and even then you can just tell the window manager to scale the whole thing.

I say all this because things will literally be clearer and more legible if you run your monitor at native resolution and have the OS/browser render things larger. If your monitor is 1080p… well… I guess just know you shouldn’t have to fear being picky with a new one if/when the time comes!

  • I dunno’, I kindof agree with a lot of their points. Quippy bantering should be reserved for the extroverted characters when it’s a near constant thing, and not all characters should be extroverts.

The Disneyficiation of Hollywood is totally valid critique. Not every show needs to have Guardians of the Galaxy levels of quippy banter.

Not to say they ruined SNW with it, but it was pretty noticable. The show is leagues better than Disco or Picard in respecting the nature of Star Trek.

  • Ahh yeah, I’ve had plenty of issues with that too. I’ve no idea when it started to just work for me. I just started to give ‘er an angled yank and it started working. It kinda’ reminds me of the stories of how F1 cars perform. They have so much down force that you pretty much have to rocket through the corners to keep grip up. If you try to tip-toe up to the edge like with a normal car, you’ll just slide out before you reach peak performance, bacause faster means more grip.

Like with the tape guns, I think some require you to be a bit rough with it and the little flappy plastic thing, or else it doesn’t bite enough to cut the tape.
