As someone with a modded gameboy that I rarely play I feel attacked. The fun part is modding it, actually playing is just a bonus. I only really play it while traveling, which I haven’t been doing often.

Malicious Compliance@lemmy.world•[Video] BBC cuts away during pro-Palestine musicians Kneecap. The followup act Bob Vylan invents a new chant on live TVEnglish
271·6 months agoEven if it were the case that they didn’t want to be there, “just following orders” is not an acceptable excuse for committing a genocide. The morally correct thing to do if you’re compelled to service in the IDF is to refuse and face the consequences, because they cannot be worse than the moral injury of being tasked with the murder of innocent children.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•In case you were having a good day so far
131·1 year agoThat’s because it’s exaggerated, and the kids play into it rather than cringing and moving on like you might have when you were a kid and adults tried using your slang. The reason is that unlike previous generations, gen Z has incorporated it into youth culture as a result of the current state of the internet and has a name to call it by: brainrot.
Worked in a few kitchens when I was a teenager and those industrial dishwashers usually have a sink to the right of them and a flat surface to the left so you can slide trays of dishes through them from right to left. The dishwasher itself divides the dirty and clean areas so there’s no cross-contamination. If one were set up so that you just slide the tray in and back out the same way I don’t think that would meet hygiene standards.

2·1 year agoI didn’t mean to imply that the Wright Brothers were single-handedly responsible for the space-age tech boom lol, just that the royal “we” were about 66 years out from the moon landing at the time the Wright Brothers had their first successful flight.

6·1 year agoI’d say we’re as close to that as the Wright Brothers were to figuring out the Apollo moon landing
So about 66 years then? I personally think we’re very far from creating anything on par with human intelligence, but that isn’t necessary for a lot of terrible things to come from AI tech. Honestly I would be more comfortable with a human-level or greater AI than something lesser still capable of agency.
If an AI is making decisions with consequences I’d prefer that it could be reasoned with as a peer, or at the least be smart enough to consider its’ own long-term sustainability, which must in some way be linked with that of humanity’s.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Was it a good thing that SNW explicitly said the Federation is socialist?English
18·2 years agoI’ve noticed a trend in some new American media coming out of more openly positive depictions of socialism/communism. The new HBO The Last Of Us series for example has this scene, and the new Fallout series has a more centrist/neoliberal take but at least calls out how the right uses communist as a “dirty word,” though she qualifies the statement by first saying “I’m not a communist.”

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Was it a good thing that SNW explicitly said the Federation is socialist?English
8·2 years agoWhat you described is just welfare, not socialism. Socialism is collective ownership of the means of production, meaning there would be no need to re-distribute wealth as it would be fairly distributed from the start.
What you’re thinking of is more along the lines of what Scandinavian countries have, which is just capitalism with social democracy and extensive welfare programs.
I’m speedrunning this shit.
Luckily the writers were able to finish it the way they wanted with a second season, and it’s fantastic. AMC almost did axe it before the second season released but after it was already finished but fans were able to get them to release it.
That also reminds me of this scene from Invincible where during the copying process their experiences are sort of “blended” making them see from both bodies at once, only here they both live and are separate afterwards.
Edit: is it obvious how much of a sci-fi geek I am lol
If anyone’s interested in a hard sci-fi show about uploading consciousness they should watch the animated series Pantheon. Not only does the technology feel realistic, but the way it’s created and used by big tech companies is uncomfortably real.
The show got kinda screwed over on advertising and fell to obscurity because of streaming service fuck ups and region locking, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s at least partially because of its harsh criticisms of the tech industry.
The tv show Pantheon figures it will work, but it will be very disturbing.

The animated series Pantheon has a scene depicting exactly this, and it’s one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen.
Edit: Here is the scene in question. It’s explained he has to be awake during the procedure because the remaining parts of his brain need to continue functioning in tandem with the parts that have already been scanned.
