  • I have a 8 sas drive ITX NAS. The one and only case that I found suitable is the Jonsbo N3 as it has a sata/sas back panel. It fits all of that in a small size so it is great.

It fits your price (not if you have to buy an itx motherboard tho) but it’s hard to find, even harder on second hand market.

(For the hardware inside it I went to used consumer hardware, like asus itx MB, intel 10500t and ddr4 non ec, for the same reason as you).

  • I work on the apple ecosystem too, but it came from my tests of making an hackinstosh on an old Lenovo.

It then discovered that I could use the same tools with the same shell language, doing the same tiling WM etc etc, all of that on an always working OS that I didn’t need to debug when shit got wrong (I was using Arch, BTW).

From then on I always work on 2nd hand refurbished macs. My daily desk tool in an m2 Mac mini and this thing is amazing. Linux is now only present on my server and gaming PC.

But maps are on organic maps, not apple 😉

  • FFS, today when you look for something on start page or any search engine you get YouTube links or AI shit from non related websites.

    • Video game solution? Check my 30 min video.
    • Tech problems? YouTube and AI telling you to update drivers and reboot, on a website named sport-something.
    • Error 26894? Fucking YouTube video again (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

At the time you could put Reddit on your search but we all know that won’t be a solution anymore, plus, because of people like me most of Reddit results are now a chain of deleted - deleted - deleted messages 😄

  • LOL

Fuck the employer, we riot and strike every few months, does it look like we care about employer regulations and company image? Without us the company will die and the head of state won’t allow it, so we do basically whatever we want.

Plus safety isn’t the issue here, not when Internet Explorer 6 or 7 was the only supported browser till late 2023. We are talking here about the non safety critical “admin network”, the network with only the administrative computer (emails, word processors etc).

The really safety critical network is air tight from the administrative world and Internet, it runs on Linux with tons of hardware redundancy.

Windows machines are just glorified type writers and internet browsing screens, they serve no operational business.

  • Ah shit.

Thanks for the feedback, it is greatly appreciated as those things are expensive.

I guess we are fucked until the EU make a new pro-consumer law. But that would take years (if they ever make it).

Another possibility would be to use a projector (it is only for homelab NAS movies afterall). I have a xgimi in my bedroom and it is somewhat great once connected to the free AppleTV my ISP gave me. Otherwise the default google tv OS on it is pure shit.

  • Ah! I was reading that post yesterday https://lemmy.world/post/22309068 as I am looking for a 55’ 4K oled dumb display.

    So far no joy.

Apparently some manufacturers makes internet mandatory at first boot and even if you block or disconnect it later it will nag you for firmware update every now and then.

The only possibility I have found for an EU customer at the moment is Sony Bravia. Yup Sony sucks but apparently Bravia’s let you choose to refuse the terms of service and not use the smart things, thus making them dumb tv.

But maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s not the case anymore or maybe they will decide to change that.

That sucks, if any of you knows about a commercial display/computer monitor/dumb tv in oled 4K hdr 55’ available in Europe, I might fall a little bit in love with you.
