It took my brain way longer than I want to admit to figure out, what is wrong with that line… I gues my brain just autocorrected it for me without me even knowing.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Organic Maps fork CoMaps launches on major app stores for iOS and Android
14·7 months agoAlready deleted organic maps and downloaded comaps instead and used it yesterday. Works great for navigation showing intersections and turns at a nice zoom level and clear guides. Love it over Google maps already.
Only major downside is live traffic and also that map changes for closed roads doesn’t seem to update the navigation. The navigation still takes me down a temporary closed road that as far as I can see on osm.org is marked as closed but I’m not sure who’s fault it is because the road is also still visible on osm.org and only by selecting the road and looking at metadata can I see that it is closed. Not sure how and where to report this bug.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do I securely host Jellyfin? (Part 2)English
1·9 months agoIt can be a good idea to mentatlly seperate your router needs with you 2.5G speeds and WiFi needs, they dont have to live on the same device. For you private lan you need a router so you can hide and control your devices behind NAT and firewall. For that I’d just recommended one of the small hap or hax devices that suits your needs for routing, and/or wifi. If you want to be fancy the RB9005U could maybe work with your switching need as well.
You don’t need Vlan. I believe it is not what you think it is. Vlan is if you want to segregated your own lan int to different independent lans with various firewall rules.
All you need for your dorm is NAT. But for the love of god make sure that you dont connect your lan with the dorm lan or your DHCP server will start handing out IP’s to everyone else in your dorm and it will crash the dorm router. The ethernet jack in the wall of your dorm (I assume that’s how it works for you) needs to go to the WAN port of the router. But bare in mind on mikrotik you can configure the WAN port to be any physical port you want, but with default config it is port 1.

5·9 months agoI have done this before as well when living in a dorm where wifi was shit so i did my own little setup in my room so I could stream to Crome cast etc on my own trusted lan. Get a small router with support for wire Guard vpn (i love mikrotik for this) and you have an easy way to tunnel out for all your devices.
well, it is better than an error with no description, filename, line of code nor exit code or linke to a log file… I have had way too many of those in those pesky “no code” environments and applications that is supposed to make programming equipment easy.

9·1 year agoDisgusting… Just wait untill scammers find a way to hijack this with SEO spam and any link can potentially lead you malicious content even on websites you trust since Google can now place links anywhere.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Whats on your USB stick? Looking for recommendations for handy toolsEnglish
10·1 year agoWhat’s on my USB stick you ask… A bunch of random shit I haven’t touched for 8 years so I have no idea what it is and it’s probably outdated, but I’d be damned if that usb stick is not In my keychain because “I might need it one day”
Here’s an idea. Use a mikrotik router board. They are super cheap and support VPN natively. I use wireguard but it should also support openVPN as well. Maybe more I’m not sure. The small hap series are super cheap and works great.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Router died - Replacement/solution recommendationsEnglish
31·1 year agoMikrotik all the way. But prepare yourself for a nice steep learning curve, but now that om past that i sware by it. Super fast and infinity configurable. The entire router configuration can be exported as a txt file and imported in seconds so if it breaks just get a new one and load up your config and you are good to go. Also the forums are a gold mine of information. What i love the most is just how fast it is. Setting take effect instantly. Also means it is extremely fast to lock yourself out of not careful. Again, steep learning curve but really good after that.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Windows 11 is now an ad platform--this is why we're here
6·2 years agoHow long before the majority of game development is defaulting to Linux/Unix instead of windows? Getting native Linux games to run on windows is only becoming easier and easier with WSL? To me it seems like less of a hastle than trying to go the other way like we do today with proton and wine. Can someone enlighten me?

36·2 years agoBS like this has made it impossible to maintain a consistent experience for my parents who aren’t super tech savvy. It’s so frustrating helping them over the phone for hours only to realise that windows just on a whim changed major settings without any user interactions. Changed theirs OS to Debian now. Much better.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•KB, MB, GB, and TB are all part of the metric system. What empirical measurements should we Free™️ Americans use for computer memory?
14·2 years agoProbably something based on 1/6 th of a byte that originates form old IBM systems that used 6 bits per byte that was then later never changed into 8 bit systems so you now have to convert between 6 bit and 8 bit systems and then fractions, gotta get those good fractions. So they’d say something like my SSD is 170⅔ GB for a 128GB drive

Not open source but freeware and really simple and powerful. Absolutely no BS program and it just gets right to the business.
https://www.faststone.org/
I’ve used it for years on Windows. I wish there was a similar program for Linux thats just freaking works.
Forgot to mention that it is stupid farst since it preloads images into memory so it can display images instantly hence the name. Perfect for browsing network shares. I only used the faststone image viewer, so not sure how the other programs work but I’m sure they are great too.
