  • Yeah, the fact it’s only mobile games surprised me a bit, especially since they don’t seem to mention it anywhere until you see the only platform filters are iOS and Android.

There are several games I have a small interest in but from companies I don’t trust much, so a review of the potential manipulation tactics in those might have been useful to me.

I don’t play mobile games though. This is unfortunately not at all exclusive to mobile.

Edit : just saw the notice about other platforms coming. Makes sense.

In case someone is wondering. Charizard already had a smash amiibo long before the others, because Smash Bros 4 (3DS/Wii U) replaced the pokémon trainer, who had the three of them in the previous game, with only Charizard. Part of the compromises they made for 3DS was removing characters with multiple forms. Since Smash amiibo were created for Smash 4 originally, it had a Charizard amiibo.

In Smash Ultimate, “everyone is here” so they released the other two. And they released Snake too, since he was not in 4 either.

  • Part of it might be applying the many patches of definitions and stuff, but it’s probably mostly just loading a shitload of png files in memory.

Even worse, even after years of updates, the several literal minutes of loading on a HDD happen on a completely unresponsive, static screen (Windows even prompts you with that “kill the app or wait for it to respond” pop-up if you alt-tab out of it).

There’s a mod to add a progress bar to that initial mod loading. Yeaaah.

  • I’ve been replaying Dragon Quest Builders 2. The game isn’t voiced, most of dialogues are classic RPG text boxes that you can speed up and skip, BUT. There are special lines of dialogue that are “voices” in a character’s head.

They are unskippable, and they’re like a dozen words each that stay on screen for about 20 seconds or more. Some of those dialogues have about 6-7 of those. It’s unbearable, and it’s genuinely the worst part of starting a game again. Hell, it was the worst part of doing it the first time, too.

Somehow English localisation created this, in Japanese the messages go a lot faster. Though even those couldn’t be skipped, because… fuck you that’s why.

  • It’s a bit awkward, because I liked HZD, I completed it, DLC and all, but I don’t consider it a good open world. I learned after a few hours that exploring is almost never rewarded, and you’d way better follow the few very obvious threads the game is setting up for you.

Going into a hidden path before you’re sent there by a quest is just wasting time, you’re going to struggle a lot, you’ll get nothing at the end and you’ll often even have to go back the way you came. Going outright off-road, even a little, spams you with “turn back now or I reload your save” messages. Which is baffling, I’ve never seen a game trying such a bad way to keep you inside the playing area. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game border that’s such a mess to begin with.

Great story, great characters, fun battle mechanics. But as an open-world game, I don’t think it works.
