  • Right, loans and stock market shenanigans are different animals. I assumed you were talking about the former given the context of “how did OpenAI find the money to pay AMD $78bn”.

In retrospect, I suppose options could have played a factor… but then again this level of ratfuckery is well beyond my understanding, so you could tell me Santa gave them the money and it’d make just as much sense.

  • Your collateral is now useless, give me more collateral or pay me back

I’m no economist, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how loan contracts work. The lender is taking a risk and is agreeing to accept the offered collateral as insurance against the debt. They can’t just decide they don’t like the collateral any more and unilaterally change the terms.

That’d be like if you took out a mortgage to buy a $300K house for a $250K sale price, and then a flood comes through and damages the property to the point that it’s only worth $200K, and the bank came knocking and said “pay it back or at least fork over another $100K so we feel comfy again.”

  • It’s not worth the headache IMO. Just run a docker VM and use lxc for the one-off systems that you want to experiment with.

I have a “production” docker VM and a “sandbox” docker VM and prod only ever runs compose files that I’ve vetted in sandbox. Super stable, basically bulletproof, and still has the flexibility to experiment and break stuff without affecting my core services.

  • I love that FreeCAD exists and use it often, but I really hate how much you have to “fight” the UI. I even briefly considered learning OpenSCAD out of frustration with the ui and the toponaming problem (before realizing that switching to OpenSCAD would just shift my frustration onto Javascript fuckery).

Now that the latter is fixed, though, I have just forced myself to forget how to do things the “normal” CAD way (i.e. using patterns and flows that most other software has standardized around) and instead how to do them the FreeCAD way.

I hope at some point we get an overhaul of the UX, but in the meantime I’ll grin and bear it since I have yet to find an even remotely comparable F/OSS CAD software that works the same on both Linux and Windows.

  • I can attest to projectivy and smarttube, they are great. I went with the internet’s recommendation on the $20 Walmart/onn Google tv 4k box, with projectivy as the launcher instead of the default.

My only gripe so far is that the remote doesn’t seem to consistently turn the box on, I have to go unplug the box every so often to reset it. probably some misconfiguration that’s making it not wake from sleep correctly.

Despite that issue, 10/10 experience: ad free YouTube, fast jellyfin in 4k, fully customizable ui…
