Welcome to jellyfin!
Well that is a shitty argument
The US still controls ICANN and with that they can pretty much do with DNS names whatever they want. Steal it from a German registrar? Well yeah, they actually can, what are you going to do to stop that? That is a known issue, actually.
I fully agree that they can switch domains but do not underestimate the importance.of domain names.
Also, they can force Google and Bing to censor Wikipedia completely, not having any links to it anywhere. With that, for most users it won’t exist anymore
There is a shit load of things that they can do to really make everyone miserable, this is what you get for giving the US damn near veto powers on Internet issues
But it does
It can confiscate the domain name and with that, Wikipedia will be gone. People all over the world will have backups, and clones will spawn like there is no tomorrow but there is no federation, so each will do their own independent thing, fracturing mankinds knowledge even more
I vehemently dislike “inarguably” claims as it’s a similar strategy as “protect the children, you would want to leave a child unprotected, now would you?” and this is a double whammy as it is about protect children so, yeah.
Having said that.
I think there are definitely issues to be resolved.
The way social media keeps kids reeled in is one thing. In the past I saw teenagers doing stuff together, laughing, getting themselves into trouble (as a part of growing up), endless endless chattering together… Now I continuously see groups of teenagers quietly on their phones in a group, only interrupted by every now and then one teen showing something to others.
Just in general, I think little kids should have a bit less media to begin with. Again, I walk over the street and see mother’s with tiny kids and they’re already glued to the screen instead of looking around. I feel like that generation misses the beauty of the world outside in lieu of constant screen time. I getting, it’s nice and quiet for the parents who also want a life, but it seems a lot. It sort of feels like these kids are losing humanity and instead get this new world of only tech, and soon, only AI.
I think there are loads of other issues to be resolved as well. I’m a staunch advocate for banning mobile phones on schools (exceptions where needed) for example.
Having said all that, I don’t think that outright banning social media for kids is a good idea either, it doesn’t have to be a nothing or everything decision.
One thing could be that social media companies could be forced to publish their selection algorithms, and requiring said algorithms to adhere to a set of laws that ensure kids can interact healthily with their products.
There are loads of other solutions out there. I don’t think a full ban is right but leaving it at how it currently is also is not a solution
I disagree, as you said it yourself: companies ARE making it harmful, so it IS harmful. That, and there are various other reasons why its harmful
Its not an empty panic if you actually have real reasons why its harmful.
First you’d need laws in place that determine how the social media algorithms should work, then we can talk.
Care to elaborate?
Like seriously, with the PHP extension gone from the URL you wouldn’t know it’s PHP but somehow it’s old because…?

And there is no way that anyone could have predicted that.
Right?
it’s not really a proper language
Why, oh true Scotsman?
It’s slower than compiled languages
Probably, but it requires a whole lot less work to get something done. One developer pays for 20 big ass servers, so if I have to spin up one or two extra servers over requiring way less developers, that is a no-brainer
The go syntax is cleaner than PHP
Go kinda looks/feels like JavaScript to me whereas PHP feels more like C. I find modern PHP syntax to be cleaner than go, but that is a personal opinion. Either way, maintainability has more to do with your developers and coding guidelines than with the language itself.
So does your comment, what’s your point? Are you really trying to tell me that an app developed in PHP 15 years ago still feels old? Because doh.
Next cloud feels old to you?
PHP doesn’t have a built in web server because it doesn’t need one, makes development a whole lot easier as each page is it’s independent process. No worries about memory loss, state corruption, or other issues. IMHO it adds to its security and ease of handling
It’s super fast and easy to setup and get going
Web sockets work just fine, I use them daily on dozens of servers doing hundreds of requests / sec all day every day
They did an audit and found issues? Great, I applaud people searching and finding issues. Shall we do the same for Rust, go, or chuckle JavaScript?
You’re unfamiliar.with the language. <<< Yeah, that is the standard reason for hating PHP, it’s not <insert my personal favorite language>
Doubt? I’m sure they will try. That’s why, fuck closed source software
Why would anyone even use Synology?
Just buy a pc with big hard drives
The day that AI can program perfectly is the day it can improve the itself perfectly and it’s the day that we’ll all be fucked.
I personally vote for some sort of direct brain interface (no Elmo, you’re not allowed to play) that DOES allow direct recall of queries but does NOT allow ads ffs) that allows us to grow with AI in intelligence. If you can’t beat em (we can’t), join em.
So really your only reason for possibly not liking next cloud is that it’s PHP, correct?
What is the problem with PHP? I keep asking it and until now every response has been near me worthy. “Don’t like PHP because some function calls are not consistent.”, “don’t like PHP because 20 years ago it had Manu unsafe practices!”, that sort of nonsense.
What is the problem with PHP, for you?
PHP junk
So serious question: what,.in your mind, is junk about PHP?
Of course it’s nonsense and bullshit, but managers who don’t understand software development (and don’t want to, they literally don’t give a shit) parrot this bullshit line and others over and over to push for faster development.
I was lucky enough to be left to my decides for a while and I’ve build an extremely dependable phoundation on which I’m now building various products and the company now is starting to churn out great dependable products because of it. The old guard still hasn’t been able to move forward in 2 years because they’re only busy with puttibg out fires everywhere all day every day.
Again: switch to Linux already, use Libre Office or if you have to, google docs. Heck, install onlyoffice if you want it self hosted online, anything but Microsoft
