Yeah I need read and write, I will look at posix for Ocis though.
I’ve heard of seafile but i remember something about it turned me off, ocis on the other hand sounds awesome, owncloud but written in go? I will definitely look into that and thanks for the recommendation.
That’s right I need native drive mounting into dolphin and Macos finder. Seafile doesn’t have it for any linux file Explorer which means it won’t work for me.
I think Ocis does have it though.
I haven’t used nextcloud but it seems frustrating that there isn’t any really good selfhosted file cloud. Nextcloud is really chunky and inefficient but it seems to be the best option despite that.
Proxmox definitely has a harder set-up i am currently doing it right now and I’ve found it a bit of a learning curve, but it is definitely the ultimately better and more fun option if you ask me ;)
Someone should correct me if I’m wrong but auto update should be as easy as scheduling the commands for apt or whatever package manager your using to update.
For me at least I never considered a synology nas it seemed like the apple of home servers. Especially when I enjoy building machines anyway there was no point. Although I can definitely see the appeal for some people.
I wonder if there are more open solutions that don’t require building a machine from scratch.
Finally starting my self hosted journey. I have everything I need I’m setting up a 6tb nas for linux iso’s photos and files. And I recently got a “broken” laptop that works perfectly fine that I will use for running all my applications in proxmox such as immich, jellyfin and nextcloud. And probably many others in the near future.
Kubenetes or k3s and some volunteer computing programs. Or mine monaro to offset the power bill of your other servers.
It’s not really a battery killer at all. It would never fit or be useful in a car, phone or anything portable. It’s more of a possible replacement to pumped-storage hydroelectric.
Ok so of course the best solution is both raid and offsite backups. After that the question is how much do you want to prioritize convenience vs not losing you data at all costs. For irreplaceable data that you care deeply about not losing make an offsite backup it’s not worth the risk, never rely on raid to keep your data safe it may not always work. For data that is replaceable and you don’t really want to lose temporary access to in the event of a drive failure then raid is fine it most likely won’t fail.
If you are making a backup please make it offsite if you can it just provides one massive extra layer of security that makes it much harder for any permanent data loss to occur. It doesn’t have to be in a NAS it can just be a hard drive by itself in a friend or relatives house, Whenever you come over and visit update the drive for any changes. One downside to this method is pretty obvious, in the event of your drive at home failing the data that you have backed up will be as old as the last time you backed it up, so if you are constantly creating new data that you can’t risk losing then this won’t work. And this goes without saying you should really have all of your data encrypted but especially your offsite backups I wouldn’t trust anyone with my data.
A good compromise and probably what I would do is use raid all your files and then use your 2tb hard drive to backup all of your really important data that you don’t want to lose. With this setup it’s possible to lose some data in the event that your raid setup doesn’t work for whatever reason or your house burns down but at least all of your important data is completely safe.
Yeah always look for where a service gets its money from before you get anything.
Maybe start at the trustpilot reviews.
Yeah I deleted honey a while ago just because it was owned by PayPal and it probably sells all your data. Just one extra reason to add to the pile.
The idea of honey is good though any possibilities of an open source version?
Apples existence should face criminal charges for sucking too much.
Always have a offside backup for any data you deeply care about it’s never worth he risk.
F-droid
It would also be super easy to clean when you need to and say goodbye to taking off glass panels every time you want to upgrade.
What do you mean that’s debatable? Robotaxis are a service just like normal taxis and ubers and everything else you rent.
That looks so sick!
Yeah ofc Lol.
