I thought a lot about getting out of tech about eight years ago. I landed on becoming a history professor as the role that would be most fulfilling. I hated school and I would hate getting accredited, but I believe I’d be able to impart the joy of history to a handful of students. Too bad I hated school. I’m still in tech.

Meh, I can’t dunk on this one. Despite paying for a password manager, I still use the same password for things I don’t care about / that can’t be used to exploit me. The other day I had to register for something stupid and that’s what I used, yet again. Granted, I’m not logging into game-changing accounts with it, but I get it. I’ll dunk on her for policy.
I’m a unix nerd. They built their OS on unix. It’s not unix anymore, but I don’t think they’re intentionally making it difficult. I had more trouble going from unix/linux to windows understanding where files were.
I’ve been in a similar situation (only mine was that I’d chosen to go my own route for six years or so and the employment gap was the primary issue). I just wanted to encourage you not to give up. @[email protected] already gave great advice, so I have nothing more to offer. Keep trying. You’ll get there. Good luck!

Yes, it should be better. But you know how you mass-produce a product at a competitive price (though premium) and sell a shitload of them? By optimizing for the average user. They should be awesome in every area. But when you choose what you focus on, it’s not the tiny number of users with niche needs. This is similar to arguing that they should have higher than 10Gbps transfer speeds. It’s not useful for enough people to justify the cost. And software is a cost, just as is hardware.
