Not to be nitpicky but those locations are all over the place, lol. I wonder what the actual percentage of programmers need to pivot to slop cleanup duty.

96·5 months agoThis reminds me of how I showed a friend and her company how to get databases from BLS and it’s basically all just text files with urls. “What API did you call? How did you scrape the data?”
Nah man, it’s just… there. As government data should be. They called it a hack.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Now that I've got my conclusion, it's time to go look for evidence that only supports said conclusion!English
22·5 months agoThis isn’t terribly believable; I’ve seen some wildly bad takes in “the literature” because there’s just so many for-profit journals that you get a ton of junk science. That, or you find something in the archives from 50 years ago.
Now, if the professor is any good they’ll put restrictions on even that but the bar is so low we’re just happy to see a citation that isn’t a blog or made up by AI.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Los Angeles paid $400M+ in 4 years to people hurt/killed on the streets. LA spends more money paying off people injured or killed by its street designs than it spends making streets safer.English
32·6 months agoCarbrain is strong, but they’re still trying to invest some in public trans. Unfortunately, I saw recently they’ve been pushing a public Uber alternative as a sort of last step after using a train, which I can’t imagine helps.
I kind of understand why-- LA is very spread out. I was told or was because of earthquakes that we couldn’t build high but that doesn’t seem to be true anymore.
If it’s any consolation, we haven’t taken the “one more lane” thing too far, there aren’t 12 lane freeway monstrosities at least.
I mean, it’s actually healthier to an economy to keep the well trained immigrants but you know how racist af people are. These aren’t just professionals, they’re pre-wealthy professionals and often have seed money to lead start-ups, lol
But racism and xenophobia are self destructive.
Having actually worked in academia, though, this actually does have a kind of fucked up capitalist answer (and it really isn’t merit) which is most true in public universities more so than Harvard: international students pay more. A lot more, in fact… so much so that my alma mater of UCLA has marketing campaigns in places like China.
As others point out, though, this isn’t zero-sum. More money theoretically means more subsidized US students (and more seats in general). At UCLA, this is especially true since any Californian making less than a certain amount can pretty much get a free ride (and even if not that, highly discounted tuition). I myself being a beneficiary of that, too, btw.
Now, private schools on the other hand, they probably pocket that cash. USC being my most local example, but I bet Harvard does the pay to win shit, too. I think it’s correct to take issue with how they operate, but MAGA is misleading people as they always do in any form of class warfare.
Language learning is just a hobby when you’ve got universal translators.
There are 8 billion people on earth and close to 400 million are in the US. There can, and will be, even worse takes out there.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Most programmers just google it anyway
18·9 months agoWhen I needed to pick up on some basics, it actually did help but ultimately not as much as actual guides and tutorials written online. This image of a chimera certainly matches the kind of Frankenstein code I was getting.
That said, when I was having some very interesting ideas about making automated code in R, it did make for a good sounding board. You don’t need to Google when everything in R has documentation but you do when you’re combining libraries in unique ways to automate 98% of the stupid shit you do at your data researcher job (e.g. can you look up in our database how many students pick their nose during philosophy class on a Friday?)

192·9 months agoI just some a lot of Lemmy are neurodivergent and do in fact require /s.
Which is actually halfway true, the other half being a more international crowd that aren’t on the same page as whatever perspective you’ve got. That said, I got the joke and second you on spending more time with my feet on my desk while the boss pays me for my 20 minutes of work.
I should use this as an excuse to finally get a NAS setup. Maybe.
Yeah, I’m afraid the tech bros cut costs by not saving backups and removing all the old ones. Hell, all our changes are made in prod, no staging allowed here.
That’s why you always go for the porn family plan, much better value and you can share it with Grandma /s

It’s a shame people can’t just seek out friends at random for real, but in this day and age it’s obviously a scam.
Granted, Lemmy people… idk, I guess a Lemmy friend is the kind you dm when you accidentally break your Linux. Or idk, discuss Marxism? Lol

2·11 months agoWell I suppose good and bad are usually in the application of a tool rather than the tool itself. I’ve just seen it used for good enough to know what was shown here isn’t that, haha.

Or like 95% of my college students. :(
